Laser Open Meeting - 11th April 2010
On a day when the forecast was for very light winds we were greeted by a light to moderate North Easterly- a pleasant surprise for both locals and visitors alike.
The courses were well laid and testing; the sailors, keen and competitive, were challenged by variable strength winds and levels of fitness - bearing in mind it still being early in the season.
With an excellent turnout of 20 boats, all the races started first time. It was very exciting to watch the Lawson brothers battling each other for the lead, occasionally being threatened by visitors from Derwent S C, Ullswater S C, Kielder Water S C and Royal Northumberland SC.
The wind kept good for excellent reaches and some tactical maneuvers with opportunities to 'take wind' off others! The fleet changed positions from either running in a procession or bunching up at the leeward mark; individuals gained and lost places as they accelerated in the fresh wind. Of special note was Tim Luke's 'sneak' finish in the second race and Sue Landon was fifth round the first mark in the first race - she was so surprised/pleased that she almost immediately capsized and retired!!
All in all it was a most enjoyable and fun day for competitors and their families.
Special thanks go to Myles Ripley OOD, the safety boat crews, trolley dolly(s), the catering staff and all the people who contributed to make it such a successful event. Thank you also to Sedbergh School who sponsored many of the prizes.
Well done Killington, please can we have another event soon!
